How To ‘Near Perfectly’ Guess The Correct Answer In Tests Or Exams

Could you imagine how you’d feel if faced with a difficult question? Wouldn’t you feel miserable? This is called exam fear. Some candidates fall sick just before the exam day. They might be afraid of unknown questions. We would like to share a must-know technique that could help you to answer all those unknown questions…just by having to guess answers. For an excellent counterpoint as to why you shouldn’t guess answers, though, read this article.

This particular technique will be useful in any kind of exam, whether it is a tough exam or simply a ‘friendly’ class test. This said technique tests your reasoning ability and analytic skills more than your subject knowledge. There is no structured material for most exams; this leaves candidates with no option than to expect any type of questions from any area. So there is a high chance of encountering unknown questions. Then the question is, “what should I do at such moments?”

…and the answer to this all-time great question is simply “Guess answers!”

When should I Guess?

It is absolutely a waste to leave any question unanswered. If there are only 5 minutes left and you have 20 questions to go, it is best to just guess on all of them and then use the time to go back and read some of the questions to try and get the best answer. This will ensure that the clock does not run out while you still have unanswered questions! You will get zero points for a question that you failed to answer, but you have a shot at getting a point if you guess the correct one.

It is important to note that guessing is the final key to unlock the right answer. Guessing gives you the chance to select the right answer. You can expect the 25% of the answers to be correct by intelligent guessing. Let us see how you can guess wisely.

Guessing goes according to the human Psychology. In general, I will not choose either the first answer “A” or the last one “D”. My mind automatically chooses the middle answer either “B” or “C”. I would prefer selecting the option “C”. You may think how it can be practically effective. Yes, it is practically effective. I have analyzed a set of 20 published multiple choice question papers. It was really exciting to know that the chance of getting option “C” is likely to be high.

What are my Odds?

Traditionally, multiple choice exam questions have four (4) answer options to pick out from, so your odds are one out of four, or 25%. That means in the scenario above, where you just randomly guess on 20 questions, you would expect to get 5 of them right! However, when the test is a bit different, with 5 answers to choose from, you also have a 20% chance of guessing the right answer. Either way you slice it, 20% or 25% is much better than zero percent for a question left unanswered!

How do I Increase my Odds?

Guessing is not just for last minute desperation. Unless you are one who will get a perfect score, there will be a LOT of answers that you are not so sure of. The good news is that you can turn this into a positive instead of a negative. Instead of focusing on the fact that you do not know the answer, see if you can eliminate one or two obviously wrong answers and then guess from the remaining choices. If you eliminate 1 answer from among the 5, you will have increased your guessing odds from 20% to 25%. That is something to focus on, because it is a victory, however small, and can keep you from becoming de-motivated during the test.

Remember that almost no student in Singapore will know the answer to every single question. If you go into the test expecting that, then you are less likely to get discouraged during the exams. Take away a small victory from every question.

1) Increase your odds by narrowing down the possible answers.

2) If you have to just guess without having a clue, focus on how much time you just saved by quickly moving on to the next question! Get those questions that you don’t know out of the way and save your time and energy for the ones you can solve.

OTHER TECHNIQUES

From the Known to the Unknown

Once you go through the question paper, mark the known questions. It is always good to start with the known questions. It gives you new energy and you can manage to write the unknown question as well. Also, it saves your time. So answer the known questions.

The Problem-solving techniques

Easy questions may also turn to be hard while working out. The questions are of multiple choices.  For instance, you may have chosen an easy problem but you may find it hard in the middle. Do not lose your patience in such cases. I advise you to better move on to the next question.  If you do not know the answer, you can use the method called POE (Process of eliminating) to find the answer. It is simply eliminating the incorrect answers to find the right answer. The process of eliminating (POE) is usually the main technique applied to solve the questions.  Tests examine the analytical skill and reasoning ability. Keep your eyes open to eliminating the incorrect answers properly. There are chances for you to think the right answer to be incorrect. It becomes easy when you analyze more problem type of questions in your exam preparation.

CONCLUSION

When it comes to examination excellence, it’s all about managing your attitude. The more positive you remain, the better your score will be!

The above are the basic tactics that you need to follow if you have faced with unknown questions and need to guess answers. Do not  panic. Face your exams with confidence. It is always better to prepare for the previous year question papers in mock tests than in a “real” exam. In most exams, the questions get repeated every year or possibly biannually, at least to some degree. So, it might be a sound idea to work out previous year’s question papers to avoid guessing too much.
